Playa de Famara

Famara Beach

Famara Beach is one of the most beautiful, purely natural beaches in the Canary Islands.

It lies on the wild west coast, surrounded on one side by the famous Famara cliffs and on the other by flat desert landscape.

Reflecting cliffs at low tide

Famara Beach is at its most spectacular at low tide, when a thin layer of water remains on the almost horizontal expanse of hardened sand, mirroring the monumental Famara cliffs to create a magical spectacle.

For example, surf-forecast.com offers clear tide times for Playa de Famara.

Swimming and surfing

Famara beach is covered with fine golden sand hardened by the constant change of tides. The beach stretches for more than 6 km from the village of Caleta de Famara to below the cliffs and is ideal for long walks, jogging or simply enjoying the scenery.

Famara is not ideal for swimming. The entrance to the water is relatively gentle, but the waves are high and there are strong currents.

On the other hand, for surfers or kiting, Famara is a paradise promised, at least on Lanzarote. Right in the village of Caleta de Famara you will find several surf rentals and schools for beginners, to name a few, Surf Canarias or Lanza Surf.

There are no facilities directly on the beach, but in the nearby village you will find several restaurants and a small shop.

Accommodation in Caleta de Famara

The area around Famara beach is ideal for 1 or 2 nights if you like to surf or just like more secluded places with beautiful scenery. In the small resort of Caleta de Famara you'll find a large number of private apartments and guesthouses, but you'll be looking in vain for classic hotels.

As the local accommodation usually contains only 1-2 rooms, there is a constant shortage of places and therefore significantly higher prices than in the rest of the island (approx. 73 eur 147 eur per night).

How to get to Famara beach

By car

You can drive straight to the beach, park for free anywhere along the road and there are always plenty of spaces.

The beach is located in the small resort of Caleta de Famara at the end of roads LZ-410 and LZ-402. The airport is 24 km away.

By bus

Caleta de Famara can also be reached by bus number 31 from the inland village of Teguise and the Costa Teguise resort, which runs about 4 times a day throughout the week.

The service is supplemented by the line 20 to Arrecife, which however only runs on weekdays.
