Walking through the vineyards and along the sea

The vineyards, bordered by dozens of kilometres of lava stone walls, stretch over a large area between the village centre and the coast.

The vineyards are dominated by the magnificent red windmill of Moínho dos Frades. From the terrace of the windmill, which you can climb up the stairs free of charge, you can enjoy beautiful views.

The PR05PIC marked hiking trail winds through the vineyards and along the Atlantic Ocean.

The vineyards of Criação Velha are ideal for easy walks on more or less flat and comfortable paths that even completely untrained hikers can manage.

How to get there

The hiking trail starts at the southern edge of Madelena and ends at the coast at the port of Calhau after about 6 km.

You can park your car at both trailheads or in the middle of Criação Velha near the windmill anywhere along the street.

The Criação Velha vineyards are one of the few places that can also be reached by bus line 2, which stops at the main road in the centre of the village (about 300 metres from the vineyards).

Line 2 runs along the route Madalena - Criação Velha - Monte - São Mateus - São Joao - Lajes 3 times a day, of which 2 times a day it continues on via Piedade to Ribeirinha.
