Lagoa do Capitão

Lagoa do Capitao

The small lake, at over 800 metres above sea level, is a popular destination when travelling through the central mountains of Pico.

Lagoa do Capitão is a haven for many species of birds and is surrounded by endemic Macaronesian vegetation and numerous pastures.

The 10 best accommodations on Pico

If you're lucky on the infrequent clear days, you'll get breathtaking photos of Mount Pico in the background from this lagoon.

A tarmac road leads all the way to the lake, with a spacious car park at the end. The turn-off from the main road "Estrada Longitudinal" is clearly signposted and is only about 300 metres long.

There is also a marked hiking trail from the lake down to the sea to the town of Sao Roque do Pico.
