Corvo has an extremely rugged and jagged coastline, which practically nowhere allows comfortable access to the sea.

The only exception is the south-western tip of the island, right at the threshold of the runway of the local airport. It is here that you will find a beautiful beach with fine black volcanic sand and absolutely breathtaking views of the high cliffs.

Swimming in the sea

Thanks to the natural rock formations in the sea that prevent large waves, swimming is safe at Praia da Areia.

There are also concrete entrances to the water for convenience.

You can use the free toilets at the adjacent campsite, where you can also change into your swimsuit or take a shower.

How to get there

The beach can be reached from the centre of Vila do Corvo in 15-20 minutes with a beautiful walk along the road that circles the entire airport. You can take a different route back.

The road is illuminated along its entire length, even at night, and Praia da Areia is a popular walking spot for tourists and locals alike.
