The westernmost of the Alesund Islands, Hessa, can be used to climb to the top of Sukkertoppen (Sugar Hill).
At 314 metres above sea level, the mountain is the highest peak in the city and considerably less visited than Aksla Hill.
The views from Sukkertoppen are breathtaking, especially towards the west, where you can already see the horizon of the Atlantic Ocean, many islands and fjords in the distance.
The view towards Ålesund gives you a perspective from a much higher altitude than from Aksla Hill, but you won't see the colourful houses of the city centre as well.
The climb up Sukkertoppen Mountain
The 3 km route in both directions together starts just outside the Hessa skole bus stop and you will climb almost 300 metres.
The path is very steep, rocky in places and over roots, but at a slow pace it is manageable even for less trained travellers, especially due to the shorter distance. From the bus stop to the top you will walk only 1,500 metres.

How to get there
You can get to the "Hessa skole" bus stop, near where the hiking trail starts, from the centre by taking the city bus number 1, which runs once an hour.
