Art Nouveau

The Art Nouveau artistic style is so typical of Riga that the city is rightly called the mecca of Art Nouveau.

The main development of this artistic style arrived in Riga in the late 19th and early 20th century, when Riga became a strategic seaport. The economic growth brought with it the construction of new houses, and in just one year five hundred new buildings were built in Riga.

Already have accommodation in Riga?

The largest concentration of Art Nouveau can be found in Alberta iela, where houses in this Art Nouveau style can be found along its entire length. Each house is unique and eight of them are listed as architectural monuments of national importance.

How to get here

Alberta iela is not part of the Old Town. If you want to walk here, allow 10 minutes and run along the Riga Canal and across Kronvalda City Park.

You won't save much time or metres in your legs by public transport. The nearest stops are Medicīnas muzejs and Elizabetes iela, served by bus lines 2, 20 and 24.
