One of Siena's unmistakable landmarks is the massive brick Basilica of San Domenico, also known as basilica cateriniana San Domenico, which, in addition to St. Dominic, is also dedicated to St. Catherine of Siena, the city's patron saint.
This Gothic church underlines its dominance by its position on the Camporegio hill, so that it can be seen from many places in Siena.
Architecture and history
The church was begun in 1220 and completed more than 200 years later in 1426. The building follows the traditional Sienese style of Italian Gothic in raw brick. The interior of the basilica is just as cold and simple, but it is all the more monumental.
As one of the few churches in Tuscany, it is entirely in the pure Gothic style, untouched by other significant alterations.
The single-nave church is built on the plan of an Egyptian empire, with no significant ornamentation, and is considered a typical example of Cistercian Gothic.
The Chapel of St. Catherine of Siena
Among the most important monuments of Siena is the chapel dedicated to the patron saint of the city, St. Catherine of Siena. The chapel was built in 1466, some 70 years after the death of this important figure in Italian history.
The chapel houses the relics of St Catherine, especially the head of the saint, which is kept in a beautiful Renaissance reliquary.
Admission and opening hours
The church is open to the public in summer between 7:00 and 18:30, and in winter between 8:30 and 18:00.
There is no admission fee and you can visit the basilica for free.
