By definition, this makes it either the world's first oldest financial institution or the world's second oldest bank, after Germany's Berenberg Bank, 36 years older.

Today, Monte dei Paschi di Siena is the 4th largest commercial bank in Italy with branches throughout the country.

In Siena you can admire the Palazzo Salimbeni, which has been the headquarters of the bank from the beginning until today. The palace is located on the main pedestrian area of Via Banchi di Sopra, which you will surely walk along several times during your wanderings around Siena.
