Of the big cities, we rank it among the most beautiful on the island, mainly thanks to its authentic atmosphere with a minimum of tourists, nice monuments and typically narrow streets with lots of hidden corners.

Sights and attractions

The town is relatively small in size and all the sights can be easily explored on foot. Don't forget to visit the following sights in Sassari:

  • TheRosello Fountain - the symbol of the town can be found on the northern edge of the centre. The Renaissance fountain dates back to the 17th century and even made it onto an Italian postage stamp.
  • Piazza Italia - the central square with the beautiful 19th century neo-gothic and neoclassical Palazzo della Provincia and Palazzo Giordano
  • St. NicholasCathedral - a magnificent 13th century cathedral rebuilt in the 15th century in the ornate Catalan Gothic style
  • Palazzo d'Usini - the best preserved example of Renaissance architecture of civil buildings in Sardinia
  • Corso Vittorio Emanuele - the main pedestrian zone that cuts through the centre and bustles with restaurants, cafes and shops

Accommodation

As Sassari is not directly on the sea, accommodation prices are noticeably lower than in the resorts. This makes it a good place to live if you want to explore Sardinia and don't mind living inland. Prices for apartments start at 55 eur for 2 per night in high season, or at 65 eur for a classic hotel.

How to get there

You probably won't need public transport in Sassari, but some information is still useful. There is one tram line from the station to the centre and buses cover the rest of the town.

A ticket valid for 90 minutes bought from a newsagent or vending machine costs 1,30 eur and is always valid on either buses or trams only. A 2-hour ticket for 2 eur or an all-day ticket for 3,30 eur is valid on both buses and trams.

Then from Sassari you can get further by intercity bus lines and by train, for detailed information about travelling by car, bus and train see the chapter Transport in Sardinia.

The main bus station is on via Padre Zirano (google.com/maps), while the railway station is about 200 metres to the north. For timetables to specific towns in the list below, click on the number/name of the line:
