San Michele Square, named after its main monument, the Church of San Michele in Foro, is a focal point on the map of Lucca and a meeting point for tourists and residents alike.

Piazza San Michele is also nicknamed Piazza delle Catene after the small marble columns connected by steel chains that enclose the square.

Church of San Michele in Foro

The main landmark of the piazza is the Church of San Michele in the Forum, dedicated to the Archangel Gabriel. It is one of the oldest churches in Lucca, first mentioned in chronicles dating back to 795.

The fact is, however, that it acquired its basic form in 1070 and its most important element, the magnificent ornate façade of the facade, during the 13th century. The façade is a typical example of the ecclesiastical architecture of Lucca, with its many arcades and decorated statues.
