The Church of St. Fridian is famous for its beautiful fresco on the facade and is one of the main sights of the town. The Basilica of San Frediano represents the typical Romanesque style of the Tuscan Middle Ages and is also one of the classic examples of Lucca's architecture before it was largely influenced by the style of neighbouring Pisa.
San Frediano is one of the oldest churches in Lucca, dating from 1147.
The façade of the basilica is not augmented by any ornate arcades as is usual with other churches in the city, such as the main cathedral of St. Martin. The tall bell tower, with its typical square plan and the battlements straight, is one of the clear features of Lucca's medieval architecture.
However, the most eye-catching feature is the golden mosaic on the 13th-century façade of the church depicting the Ascension of Christ the Saviour. It was created by the Italian painter Berlinghiero Berlinghieri.
