Piazza Mercantile, one of the most important spaces in the historic centre of Bari and a popular tourist destination.
The square has been the centre of Bari since the mid-15th century, when the buildings of the city government and important offices began to be built here. The main building of the square became the Palazzo del Sedile, the town hall of Bari for almost 3 centuries. In the 16th century, a clock tower was added to the palace, which is still one of the symbols of the Piazza Mercantile.
In the middle of the square is also the Pillar of Justice or the Pillar of Shame, to which sinners were tied and subjected to public shame.
During the 17th century most of the houses in the square were rebuilt and during the 19th century most of the institutions were moved to the newly emerging more modern part of Bari. However, Piazza Mercantile remains to this day the main meeting point for locals and tourists alike.
