At 128 metres, Hengifoss is the third highest waterfall in Iceland and, thanks to its artificial-looking backdrop of two-coloured rocks, is certainly one of the most beautiful waterfalls in this remote part of eastern Iceland.

Red and black rocks and views of the region

The narrow silvery ribbon of the waterfall contrasts with the dark high and bare rocks of the surrounding area. The black-gray basalt is interspersed with red to brick-colored horizontal lines that are the remains of petrified coniferous trees from the warmer second part of the Tertiary period.

Hengifoss itself drops from an altitude of around 450 metres and the starting point of the hiking trail lies at an altitude of just 40 metres. These figures alone suggest that from the waterfall viewpoint at the bottom of the canyon, there are breathtaking views of the wide, barren landscape.

How to get there?

Hengifoss Waterfall is located on the tarmac road number 931, which takes you to Egilsstaðir, the largest town in eastern Iceland (approx. 35 km, see route map). The road is passable all year round.

From the small car park you will then follow a 2.5 km long (one way) fairly steep but relatively easy trail (see: route map) to the best viewpoint of the waterfall.
