Goðafoss is one of the best known and most accessible waterfalls in northern Iceland. The flow of the Skjálfandafljót River falls here from a height of 12 metres, so Goðafoss is definitely not the highest waterfall in Iceland. However, with a width of over 30 metres and a wide horseshoe shape reminiscent of Niagara Falls, it is definitely one of the most beautiful.

Another advantage is that both sides of the waterfall are very easy to reach, and you can walk practically right up to the water to enjoy the monumental water spectacle up close.

How to get there?

Godafoss is located right on the main ring road number 1 between Akureyri and the Mývatn lake area.

There are car parks on both sides of the road, from which you can reach the water after less than a minute's walk. It is impossible to miss the waterfall when driving along the main road, it is clearly marked and can be seen from the bridge that crosses the Skjálfandafljót River.
