Alexander the Great, who lived in the 4th century BC, is a great figure of Greek history and to this day enjoys an extraordinary popularity even among ordinary Greeks who have no interest in history.

A monument by the sea

The monument to the famous king and warlord was erected in Thessaloniki in 1973 in the then newly created Nea Paralia, a huge square with a park that touches the seaside promenade just off Thessaloniki's most famous monument , the White Tower.

The bronze equestrian statue is just a few metres from the sea and faces south-east.

The statue of a horse with King Alexander the Great measures 6 metres in height and is placed on a 5 metre high pedestal of dark marble. The statue stands on an expanse of white marble for contrast.

The area around the statue is very popular with tourists and locals alike, and crowds of people flock here especially at sunset.
