Thessaloniki has two main forms. The first is the abundance of Byzantine and ancient monuments and the second is the sea.

The two are linked by the famous coastal promenade Leoforos Nikis, which completely encircles the city centre and flows freely into the so-called New Promenade further south.

Although the promenade itself is almost without exception lined with modern apartment buildings, just turn into one of the many perpendicular streets and in 10 minutes you'll be wandering around Thessaloniki's sights.

Along the entire length of the promenade, you won't find a single metre of railings between the street and the sea, which only adds to the great atmosphere and the feeling of proximity to the sea.

From the harbour to the White Tower

The first built-up part of the promenade is called Leoforos Nikis and stretches for 1.5 km along the entire centre of Thessaloniki. This street is lined with cafes, restaurants, bars that come alive in the morning and operate until late at night or early morning.

The lively promenade passes by Aristotle Square, the main centre of the city, and ends at Thessaloniki's most important monument, the White Tower. The area around the White Tower is one of the liveliest, both day and night.

Past the equestrian statue of Alexander the Great, your walk will then continue along the New Promenade.

Accommodation on the promenade

If price isn't a key consideration when choosing accommodation, then definitely consider staying right on the promenade. Because what's better than having a view of the sea with its many large ships from your hotel room, while being within a 10-minute walk of the historic centre?

There are only two hotels right on the promenade. The first ON Residence ***** is closer to the harbour, while the second hotel, Daios Luxury Living *****, is close to the White Tower.

Both hotels offer prices from 132 eur per night for 2, making them among the best value for money hotels in Thessaloniki.
