The centre of Thessaloniki ends at the White Tower and the coastline turns southwards. The character of the promenade, which, although it continues to run for over 2.5 km along a densely built-up area, has been transformed into a huge park area after the turn of the millennium.

A wide wooden walkway (again, without railings) runs just along the sea, separated from the bustling city by a 150-metre-wide green belt with many benches, outdoor gyms and a few bars or snack bars. If you are looking for an escape from the busy centre with minimal green space, then this New Promenade will be the ideal place.

Themed gardens

The straight, wide pedestrian path is lined on the city side with a park, a pine avenue and various themed gardens and parks interspersed throughout the length of the New Promenade.

As you walk from the north, you can gradually stop at the Shade Garden with its many gazebos and refreshment areas, the Mediterranean Garden with its typical trees of the region, the Rose Garden with its beautiful flowers of these plants, or the Water Garden with its belt of ponds and outdoor restaurant.

How to get to the New Promenade?

The coastline directly encourages a long walk along the sea from the centre, which will be around 4 km in total.

However, if you don't feel like pedalling back, just walk about 250 metres into town and you'll find several bus stops for the 3K, 5, 5B and 6 buses heading into the centre along the length of the New Promenade on Vasilissis Olgas Street.

Remember that the first main street along the seafront only goes southwards further away from the centre until the second one heads towards the centre of Thessaloniki.
