Rue Mouffetard

Rue Mouffetard

Rue Mouffetard in the 5th arrondissement of Paris is one of the most famous and lively areas in the city. It lies on the southern edge of the Latin Quarter.

Over 600 metres long, it is also one of the oldest streets. It is bordered by two magnificent squares - the Place de la Contrescarpe to the north and the Place Saint-Médard at the southern end.

Lively neighbourhood, quiet atmosphere

Although Rue Mouffetard is one of the famous tourist attractions, it lies outside of the full centre and therefore tourists still mingle with locals.

While in the morning Rue Mouffetard comes alive with many cafés, vegetable or even fish shops, as the day progresses the first restaurants, bars and wine bars open.

Rue Mouffetard is a quieter place where ordinary Parisians live, and that's why the last gardens close around 10pm.

It's best to head to the area for a morning coffee or dinner.

The atmosphere in Rue Mouffetard is truly special. Although the street is bustling with life, time passes a little slower here and the atmosphere is reminiscent of a time when no one was in a hurry to get anywhere.

Accommodation

Right on the street you will find dozens of private apartments or flats, which locals also rent out to tourists.

You'll find the classic and very pleasant Hotel de France Quartier Latin *** at the southern end on Place Saint Medard.

How to get there

Ideally combine a walk along Rue Mouffetard with a visit to the Pantheon (about 300 metres north) or the Jardin des Plantes (about 500 metres east).

The nearest metro stations are:

  • Place Monge - line 7 (approx. 230 metres)
  • Censier-Daubenton - line 7 (approx. 180 metres)
