What's the best way to enjoy the Le Panier district? Just get lost in it. The area is relatively small, so you'll always turn up sooner or later on the main promenade of the Vieux Port or at La Major Cathedral.

Soak up the atmosphere of the shady streets still inhabited by ordinary people. Le Panier is not yet ruined by tourist shops or overpriced restaurants. The local streets are quiet and have the atmosphere of old times.

Don't be surprised to find many of the houses are trashed. Murals have a long tradition in Le Panier and simply belong in this neighbourhood.

Le Panier is indeed the oldest site in the city, as Marseille was founded in this area around 600 BC.
