Fortifications

Nessebar is a well-preserved historical town, among other things, because it lies in a place that was very easily defended.

The town is situated on a peninsula connected to the mainland only by a very narrow neck. Moreover, the peninsula is not flat, so it was well defended against possible attacks from the sea.

The massive city fortifications were built as early as the 2nd century. Its most visible remnants are just at the entrance to the town from the bus station and these date mainly from the 12th-14th centuries.
