The entrance to the underground mine is still preserved, although access to the mine itself is strictly forbidden due to the unstable environment.
Sulphur was mined here from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. It was transported by conveyor belt to Green Island (a lump of rock in the sea about 50 metres off the coast of Saba) where ships could anchor.
The road to the sulphur mine
A popular trek from the bottom of the village of Zion's Hill leads to the mine entrance.
Travelling by car from Windwardside, you pass through the upper part of Zion's Hill (called Upper Hell's Gate) towards the airport. At the 2nd turn, take a sharp left and continue to the end of the road where you can park.
From the end of the road there is a roughly 500 metre long and fairly comfortable trail that even less trained hikers can manage. The elevation gain is high, but the path is short and there are no dangerous sections.
